Bookkeeper vs Accountant – what I actually do…

Now that you know a bit about me and my story, I thought it would be helpful to explain more about what a bookkeeper does. When I mentioned to a few people that I'm starting my own bookkeeping business, they were excited, but I also noticed some confusion. A few people immediately asked if I could prepare their tax returns this year. While I'm thrilled about the positive feedback, there's a common misunderstanding—this isn't something a BAS agent or bookkeeper can do.

Here's a quick breakdown of the key differences between a BAS Agent/Bookkeeper and a Tax Agent in Australia:

What Does a Bookkeeper Do?

A bookkeeper is responsible for maintaining accurate and up-to-date records of a business's financial transactions. This includes tracking income, expenses, sales, and purchases. Bookkeepers also handle reconciling bank and credit card statements, managing invoices and bills, and processing payroll and superannuation for employees. In short, bookkeepers ensure that a business's financial records are organised and balanced.

What Does a BAS Agent Do?

A BAS agent covers many of the same tasks as a bookkeeper but has additional responsibilities related to tax compliance. BAS agents help businesses prepare and lodge their Business Activity Statements (BAS), which include important tax details like Goods and Services Tax (GST) and Pay As You Go (PAYG) withholding. A BAS agent ensures that the business pays the correct amount of tax and stays compliant with Australian tax laws. They can also communicate directly with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) on behalf of the business.

To become a BAS agent, one must meet specific qualifications and have extensive experience in bookkeeping and tax compliance.

The Difference Between Bookkeepers/BAS Agents and Tax Agents

In essence, bookkeepers and BAS agents handle the daily recording and management of financial data, ensuring everything is accurate and up to date. Accountants and tax agents, however, use this data to prepare financial statements, offer strategic financial advice, and lodge tax returns. While both roles are critical for a business's financial health, they function at different levels of financial management.

What I Can Offer

Although I'm not a tax agent and cannot prepare or lodge your tax returns, I can take care of everything leading up to that point. I ensure your financial data is accurately entered into Xero, reconcile your bank accounts, and make sure your profit and loss statements and balance sheets are correct. I can also handle your BAS lodgements, so you don't have to worry about the paperwork. By keeping your books in order, I make the job of your tax agent or accountant much easier, avoiding unnecessary costs or surprises due to incomplete or incorrect records.
